Helping to increase energy and focus while improving classroom
behavior, a new interactive program -- GoNoodle -- has been
implemented into the Johnson County school system.
Representatives from Highlands Regional Medical Center and Passport
Health Plan visited Highland Elementary School on Wednesday to
introduce the GoNoodle program to the public.
Michael Rabkin, Passport Health Plan communications director said
GoNoodle is all about “five-minute brain breaks” that allow teachers
to work with their students and get them awake and active or help calm
them down through the release of excess energy. “Sometimes they need
to get their wiggles out and do it in a focused way,” Rabkin said.
“This program helps direct children toward a happy, healthy life,” he
added.
With health officials noting that obesity is a major factor in the
lives of today’s children, the GoNoodle program is a practical aid in
teaching children the importance of physical activity.
GoNoodle has been used in the Johnson County school system for about a
month. Teachers say the program helps children to get refocused while
having a little fun. GoNoodle interactive activity sets can be played
on an interactive whiteboard, projector, or computer screen.
Children start out with an activity currently related to what they are
studying. On Wednesday, students went on an interactive (virtual)
field trip to a honeycomb. Once the students “arrived” at their
destination, the GoNoodle program introduced them to facts, questions,
and videos that were tied into their learning curriculum. While
helping students energize as they “traveled” to their field trip
destination, the program also fits in with Kentucky’s Common Core
Standards by providing educational information.
Maxanna Bennett, director of marketing and public relations, Highlands
Health System, said they are getting really positive feedback about
the GoNoodle program. “It is really good academically and
physically...so we are killing two birds with one stone,” she said.
GoNoodle has also been made available to schools in Magoffin, Martin,
and Floyd counties and Bennett hopes to bring the program to other
surrounding area school districts in the future.
Jamie Sparks, Kentucky Department of Education, said healthy students
are better learners. “It goes beyond the gym walls,” he added.
GoNoodle activities help children learn to feel accomplished at
school. The program can also be implemented in the home environment,
as well.
The GoNoodle program is co-sponsored by Passport Health Plan and
Highlands Regional Medical Center.
